Data sources & licensing
DFPSA is committed to publishing only information we have the legal right to use commercially. This page explains where our data comes from, how we attribute it, and the principles we follow.
What we publish — and what we don't
What we use
- Factual information (agency names, locations, equipment models, public statistics) — facts are not copyrightable.
- U.S. federal government works (FAA, NIST, DOJ publications) — public domain.
- Public agency press releases and websites — quoted briefly with attribution.
- News article headlines and links with publisher attribution — nominative fair use.
- Manufacturer model names and publicly published specifications — descriptive use.
- Organization names (AUVSI, DRONERESPONDERS, LEDA, FAA, NIST) used to describe their work — nominative fair use, not endorsement.
What we don't use
- Third-party logos, trademarks, or seals.
- Bulk copies of proprietary databases or paid datasets.
- Copyrighted article bodies, photographs, or videos without license.
- Manufacturer marketing imagery without permission.
- Any claim of partnership, certification, or endorsement we don't have in writing.
- Personally identifying information about individual officers, pilots, or responders.
